About

the one percenters is for those that show up. It is a platform for amazing local community sport stories to be shared. Whether you’re Scott that supplies the half-time oranges or Kathy who just played her 100th game, your story should be told! Please reach out through the “Contact” tab and help me show why we call it community sport.

My Why

The beauty of community sport is that it’s for everyone. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, how fast you can run or how high you can jump. All that matters is you show up and give your all, week in, week out.

Just like millions of other Aussies, I love my sport. I’ve played soccer and basketball at different competitive levels and experienced the highs and lows that come with the wins and losses.

My inspiration for the one percenters came in early 2024. Coming off yet another bottom of the ladder finish the season before, my community basketball team needed change. A season defined by hard work, culture and dedication culminated in a 1-point grand final victory, crowning us Division Champions. It is a story of setbacks and sacrifice - words that get laughed at and dismissed because they are not describing the highest sporting stage.

And that was exactly my motivation: Australian sporting media is amazing, but relatively myopic. All too rarely do amazing local sporting stories get shared - many of which may be more exciting, emotion-provoking or gut-wrenching than those we hear and read every day.

So, I am here for you; whether you’re Dave that runs the team’s cafeteria or Grace that kicked the game-winner on Sunday, your stories deserve to be told.

Me

My name is Ben Garson and I live and breathe sport. Given I’ve had a rather underwhelming soccer and basketball career, I live vicariously through the players within my television screen.

Who I support:

  • AFL: Gold Coast Suns (not a joke!)

  • NFL: Seattle Seahawks

  • Soccer: Melbourne City & Manchester City

  • UFC: Robert Whittaker

  • NBA: Chicago Bulls

I’ve never really gotten around rugby, cricket, baseball and other sports, but I do hope that through your stories, my sporting fascination and knowledge will continue to grow.
